Fulham are preparing a January move for Manchester United’s out of favour left back Alex Buttner, according to the Daily Mirror.

New boss Rene Meulensteen is desperate to strengthen his defence in January, and is ready to raid his former club.

Fulham have conceded eight goals in their last two Premier League games, and have targeted a new left back to help them avoid the drop.

Meulensteen remains unconvinced by John Arne Riise, and has already pushed Keiran Richardson into a more advanced role amid concerns over his defensive qualities.

The ex-United coach rates Buttner highly after working with him at Old Trafford, and is understood to have added his name to his list of January targets.

Buttner is seeking a January move after failing to win the left back spot from Patrice Evra in the 16 months he has been at the club.

The Dutchman was widely tipped to be a future first choice for the Premier League champions following his £5million switch from Vitesse Arnham, but it appears David Moyes remains unconvinced.

Buttner’s agent has already claimed Italian duo Roma and Genoa are chasing his signature, but Fulham could offer him a Premier League lifeline with a possible loan move with a view to a permanent transfer at the end of the season.
