Rene Meulensteen must sort out Fulham’s defensive problems immediately in order to prevent himself following Martin Jol out of Craven Cottage, according to the Telegraph.

The Cottagers are understood to be considering offering Technical Director Alan Curbishley the manager’s position, with Meulensteen under growing pressure following a succession of poor defensive displays.

Meulensteen must oversee an immediate improvement in results to prevent himself becoming the second Fulham boss to be sacked this season.

Fulham welcome League One Sheffield United to Craven Cottage tonight for their FA Cup fourth round replay, before facing league games against Manchester United, Liverpool and West Brom.

The 3-0 defeat to Southampton on Saturday sent Meulensteen’s side to the bottom of the Premier League, and there are huge concerns that the club’s defensive record has worsened under the Dutchman.

Jol lost his job as Fulham boss after watching his side concede 31 goals in the first 16 games of the season, while Meulensteen has conceded the same number of goals in two fewer matches.

The former Manchester United coach has a good reputation for one-on-one management and technical coaching, but the club are fearful his defensive coaching is not up to scratch.

Fulham have the worst defensive record of any Premier League side, conceding 53 goals this season – 12 more than 19th placed Cardiff City.
