New Fulham boss Rene Meulensteen is ready to launch January moves for Tottenham and Seattle Sounders duo Jermain Defoe and Clint Dempsey in a bid to keep the Cottagers in the Premier League, according to reports from The Metro.

The Dutchman replaced compatriot Marin Jol as manager of the West London side on Sunday following the club’s thoroughly disappointing opening few months of the season.

Fulham currently find themselves in the bottom three with just 10 points from 13 games, which has seen worries regarding relegation increase of late.

Despite the club having invested to strengthen the first-team squad over the summer, Meulensteen has already hinted that they may have to dip into the transfer market once again, and he is believed to be eyeing attacking additions.

Defoe has been linked with a January switch to Toronto, but Fulham are hopeful that an offer to stay in the England may be enough to sway his decision.

Even if he does move to the MLS side, he may well be available on a short-term loan, with the American season not due to start until March.

Meulensteen is also eyeing a similar temporary switch for former club idol Clint Dempsey.

The USA international returned to his homeland earlier this year from Spurs, but is ready to make a temporary switch back to the Premier League in a bid to maintain his fitness ahead of the World Cup.
