Leicester City have submitted a £6.5million bid for Watford striker Troy Deeney, reports the Daily Mail.

The Foxes are building their squad ahead of their return to the Premier League, and have identified Deeney’s goals as a way of keeping them in England’s top flight division. The Watford forward has been prolific in the Championship, scoring a combined total of 44 league goals in the last two seasons.

Fellow promoted club Burnley have also shared an interest in the striker, who was in prison for two-and-a-half months back in 2012 after being convicted of affray. But after being released early, the 26-year-old came back to Watford to score plenty of goals for the Hornets.

Leicester are keen to add goals to their side, despite offering David Nugent a 2-year-extension at the King Power Stadium. As well as chasing Deeney, Nigel Pearson is looking to sign Leonardo Ulloa for £7million, which would break the club’s transfer record set 14 years ago, when the Foxes bought Ade Akinbiyi from Wolves for £5million.

The club are set for a tough start in the Premier League next season, with Pearson’s men to face Everton, Chelsea, Arsenal, Stoke and Manchester United in their first 5 fixtures. The Foxes could need all the goals they could get, and Deeney could be the man to secure a few shock results in the opening games of the season.
