Former England striker Michael Owen believes that Liverpool will pip Arsenal to a spot in the top four next season, even though the Gunners beat their rivals to Alexis Sanchez’s signature.

The Londoners recently won the race between the two clubs for the Chilean attacker, who opted for the Emirates Stadium and life in London over being a makeweight in Luis Suarez’s switch to Barcelona.

Arsenal have developed a reputation in recent seasons for their targeting of fourth spot – the last Champions League qualification place – which has been described as ‘like a trophy’.

Liverpool ran Manchester City close for the title last term, but with their 31 goals forward no longer at Anfield, Brendan Rodgers’ side are being tipped for a battle to qualify for Europe’s top competition rather than a tilt for the big prize.

And Owen – who emerged from the Merseysiders’ academy set-up – believes that his old club will beat Arsenal into the top four, with Arsene Wenger men having a lack of “stand out players” in his squad:

“I have been really impressed with Arsenal’s signing of Sanchez,” he told talkSPORT. “They have been missing a bit of quality but [they’ll miss out].

“The signing of Sanchez has made everyone sit up and take note. I really do rate him, he’s a top player and it’s a big step in the right direction.

“But, in no particular order, my top four for next season would be Chelsea, Man City, Man United and Liverpool.

“Arsenal haven’t had any real stand out players in the last few years, like Thierry Henry. They have just lagged a step behind.”

He predicted Arsenal would finish outside top 4 last season too. If he keeps going, he’ll have to be right one year – just not in any of our lifetimes

Leave alone this Man utd puppet and toy gun, his prophetic was doomed last season and it will not even survive to see the light of day. Owen is being used to demoralize Arsenal and to behave like Mourihno mouth piece. Owen take your silly analysis to old Trafford or Anfield where your opinion is needed. Arsenal we have T.Henry,Berkhamp,Pires,Gilberto and Kanu to listened to. They are our legend and hero and their opinion counts, I better seat down and listen to Vierra 100 times than prophet of doom like you who failed terribly at Barnabou and old Trafford… Keep your opinion to your wife and kids please.
