Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has insisted that the club must strengthen during the winter transfer window.

The Northern Irishman was disappointed to have to call Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard into action during his side’s Capital One Cup defeat, when he was planning to rest the duo.

The Reds started a number of fringe players for their home clash with Swansea on Wednesday, but with the team trailing Rodgers was forced to call upon his established names in the second half.

Gerrard and Suarez combined to good effect, but it was not enough as the Merseysiders slipped to a 3-1 loss.

When asked by SkySports if he was disappointed to be forced into playing his big players, Rodgers replied:

“That is the reality of where the club is at,

“I would have loved to have kept them on the side to give them a breather but obviously when you need them you need to put them on.

“The problem then is your squad becomes even thinner: I can’t keep playing Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez, who is my only striker.

“That will evolve over time, it is a team thing and we can’t rely on two players. Over the next couple of transfer windows we’ll get time to build the group.”

Liverpool are short on striking options after allowing Andy Carroll to join West Ham on loan. With Fabio Borini out injured, Suarez is the only fit, established centre-forward available to Rodgers.
