Liverpool player, despite his impressive recent form.

The winger was told by manager Brendan Rodgers earlier this season that he would be free to leave Anfield in January, but has responded with some fine Premier League performances.

Despite being the butt of many jokes during his first season on Merseyside, the ex-Middlebrough man has been showing glimpses of why former Reds boss Kenny Dalglish paid Aston Villa £20m for his signature.

Even with the addition of Daniel Sturridge to the club’s attacking armoury, and Fabio Borini’s recovery from injury, the England international has kept his position within the first XI.

But, he feels that his future with Liverpool is far from secure, and that much depends on Rodgers’ summer transfer plans:

“When the manager gave me a chance again, it was probably the last one I was going to get as he was looking at bringing players in.” He is quoted by the Daily Mail.

“If he does strengthen again in the summer, it will be good for the team. But every game I play, I have to do well as I know he is going to strengthen.”

Downing went on to say that he is just focusing on maintaining his form in an attempt to remain a key figure at the club:

“If I keep playing well, he can’t leave me out. That’s how I see it at the minute. Every time I play is a chance to prove him wrong. But if you don’t perform, he will be disappointed and you won’t play.”
