Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes believes that Luis Suarez will be making a massive mistake if he leaves Liverpool for Barcelona.

The Uruguayan is understood to be on the verge of completing a £70m switch to the Camp Nou, with negotiations between the Spaniards and the Reds at an advanced stage.

Liverpool are believed to be willing to see their top scorer from last season head through the Anfield exit door following his recent bite on Giorgio Chiellini – which has resulted in a four month footballing ban – and will not put up the fight they did to keep him last summer.

Suarez himself is thought to be desperate to make the switch, but Scholes thinks that he may regret his decision with Lionel Messi’s influence at Barca a big factor for him to overcome:

If Luis Suarez does sign for Barcelona from Liverpool, will Lionel Messi ‘accept’ him? Suarez is a centre forward and he won’t want to play out wide.” He wrote in his Paddy Power column.

“I can’t see Suarez and Messi linking well together. It seems to me, if Messi likes you, you’ll play. If he doesn’t, you’re wasting your time.

“To be honest, I think Suarez is making a bit of a mistake going to Barcelona.”
