Former Liverpool hero Robbie Fowler believes that his old club can beat bitter rivals Manchester United this weekend.

The Reds will travel to Old Trafford on Sunday to take on their arch enemies, with a first victory at the Theatre of Dreams since their 2009 4-1 triumph a genuine possibility.

As it stands, the Reds are a whopping 11 points clear and four places higher than their adversaries in the Premier League, which hasn’t often been the story over the course of the past ten years.

With United struggling under David Moyes and Liverpool having been showing their best form for some time, many are tipping the Merseysiders to heap further misery on the Red Devils, including Fowler:

“It’s always a massive game but the difference this time is that Liverpool must be favourites,” he is quoted by the Daily Star.

“I can’t remember the last time a Liverpool team went to Old Trafford in that position.

“On paper it’s a game Liverpool should win. They’re in great form and I am quietly confident Liverpool can get a big result there.”

Although much of the talk heading into the game has surrounded United’s decline, Fowler believes that Brendan Rodgers’ impact at Anfield should not be forgotten:

“People talk about how far United have dropped but I also look at it from the other side – how far Liverpool have come.

“That’s testament to what Brendan has achieved so far. He has got the team playing so well and I think teams are starting to fear Liverpool again.

“The manager deserves a lot of credit for that.”

The last time Liverpool won at Old Trafford their goals were scored by Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard, Fabio Aurelio and Andrea Dossena.
