Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann has urged his old club to push through a summer move for Southampton captain Adam Lallana.

The Reds lodged a bid of £25m for the playmaker on Friday, and are reportedly desperate to snap him up before he jets off to the World Cup with England.

The Saints skipper has been Brendan Rodgers’ top target since the season ended, but as of yet a deal has not been struck after an initial bid of £20m was dismissed.

Southampton wants close to £30m for their man as they factor in a clause that will see 25% of any fee paid to Bournemouth, yet Liverpool’s most recent offer is thought to be on a ‘take it or leave it’ basis.

If their swoop is unsuccessful Rodgers is set to move on to other targets, but Hamann – who starred for the Merseysiders during their 2005 Champions League victory – believes that Lallana is just the player his old side need:

“I think we can sign Lallana. If you see how we played last season, I think many players will be interested to play with us,” he told Goal.

“Liverpool have a great project for the future and we have a chance to sign him.

“Lallana will give us more balance in the depth of the squad. Next season we will compete in many competitions and probably will get more injuries and suspensions.

“His position is what we need at the moment and I think he will be suitable for us.”
