Liverpool have overseen a “good” deal in selling Luis Suarez to Barcelona for £75m, according to their former managing director Christian Purslow.

The Uruguayan striker is set to be officially unveiled by the Spanish giants in the coming days after a mammoth fee was settled between themselves at last year’s Premier League runners-up.

Suarez’s exit has been met with much discontent on Merseyside – regardless of his latest biting controversy at the World Cup – with many fans concerned that the man who bagged 31 goals as the Reds narrowly missed out on the title cannot be replaced.

But Purslow believes that the deal makes sense for all involved, and that the cash Liverpool are getting can be used to bring in top class players:

“It was inevitable that Luis Suarez was going to leave Liverpool, even before the bite incident at the World Cup,” he told talkSPORT.

“I’m sure the player was looking to move this summer to Spain and Liverpool have planned around that.

“Liverpool will have made a £50million profit on Suarez. I’d say that was good for everybody.

“Replacing his goals will be difficult but it’s a hell of a lot of money to reinvest in the team though.

“The squad will be strengthened across the board and that’s a good thing.”

Suarez cost Liverpool just over £20m in 2011 and is set to miss the coming four months of football due to a FIFA ban for his World Cup antics.
