Experienced goalkeeper Doni has revealed that while he was at Liverpool in the summer he suffered a cardiac arrest.

Doni was released by the Reds last month and has signed on at Brazilian club Botafogo SP but during his introduction to the press he claimed that the reason he had not been playing at Anfield was due to his cardiac arrest seven months ago.

The horrific episode occurred last summer while Doni was undergoing medical examination after returning from his holidays.

The 33 year old has revealed that the doctor is yet to give him permission to play football again however he hoped to return to training in 2014 where he can once again play for his beloved Botafogo.

This is the first that anyone has heard of the incident from last summer and Doni seems happy to reflect on it now as he knows how lucky he is to be alive.

“I was in one of the tests and had a cardiac arrest,” Doni told Globoesporte.

“I was unconscious for 25/2 and almost went to the other side.”
