Former Everton hero Tony Cottee believes that the Toffees’ cross-city rivals Liverpool should draft in free agent Samuel Eto’o.

The Reds have become shock candidates to snap up the Cameroonian, who is currently without a club after being released by Chelsea earlier this summer.

With Luis Suarez having been sold and Fabio Borini’s future unclear, Brendan Rodgers has only Rickie Lambert and Daniel Sturridge to rely on as strikers for the coming campaign, which is seen as a source of concern at Anfield given the former’s injury proneness and the latter’s lack of top club experience.

Eto’o has emerged as a shock target to boost their numbers, and Cottee believes that he would be a wise addition:

“He’s an experienced player and the one thing Liverpool need is options,” he told talkSPORT. “They didn’t have the distraction of the Champions League last season, but this year they’ve got it and they need a big squad.

“I’ve been impressed with Brendan [Rodgers]. He was fantastic last year and he’s gradually building it up. You need a lot more players to play European football so I think he [Eto’o] would be a good signing.

“He wouldn’t play every game but he’d be a good addition to the squad.”

The 33-year-old enjoyed just one season at Chelsea after arriving from Anzhi Makhachkala and has previously spent time with Barcelona and Inter Milan in a glittering career.
