Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has called on the club’s board to move swiftly to tie down Brendan Rodgers before his contract enters its final year.

The Reds boss has been a revelation since his arrival at Anfield this term, building on a solid first campaign to make his team genuine title contenders this time around.

His impressive guidance of the Merseysiders has led to rumours that the likes of Barcelona and Manchester City are looking to make him their next manager, with the Northern Irishman’s stay at the club only guaranteed up until the end of 2014/15.

Discussions between Liverpool and Rodgers are believed to have been pencilled in for the end of the season, but Gerrard wants Fenway Sports Group – the club’s owners – to step up their plans to tie down their head coach:

“I am absolutely delighted he is here and I just hope that there is a lot of movement in Boston now, because they have got to get him signed up as soon as possible,” he is quoted by The Mirror.

“When players are in this situation with a year to go and you want to keep hold of them so desperately, then the club reacts really quickly and gets it sorted.

“For me, I think he deserves a very long contract here and he is perfect for this club.”

Rodgers looks to have started a new era at Liverpool, with his slick brand of attacking football having seen the Reds emerge as one of Europe’s most exciting teams.
