Jamie Carragher will be retiring at the end of the season, England boss Roy Hodgson has reiterated his belief that the defender can go on to become a top coach.

The former England defender has had a career that has spanned 16 years, making over 700 appearances for Liverpool FC.

Hodgson, who briefly coached Carragher during his brief stint in the Premier League with The Reds has backed the 35-year-old to go on to  become one of finest young coaches in the country when he retires at the end of the season.

“After retirement I’m sure he will march quickly up the coaching ladder and become one of the country’s top young coaches,” Hodgson told BBC Sport.

Carragher made his debut for Liverpool at just 18 and only Ian Callaghan has played more times for the club.

“Having worked with Jamie Carragher it was always evident that he was a model professional who gave everything he had for club and country,” added Hodgson.

“He has had a fantastic career and will always be looked on very fondly by everyone associated with Liverpool Football Club.

“It was good to see him back in the team recently, I hope that between now and the end of the season he is able to add to his great total of appearances for the club.”

Former team mate Michael Owen also shares the beliefs that once Carragher hangs his boots up for the last time he can go on to become a success as coach.

“I’m sure he’s capable,” the Stoke striker told BBC Radio 5 live.

“He knows everyone in every single league, he’s certainly got the credentials.

“It’s whether he wants to do it and I’d hazard a guess that he would.”
