Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel has revealed that he gave little thought to leaving the club this summer.

The Slovakian was widely expected to exit Anfield before the transfer window closed, after falling out of favour with manager Brendan Rodgers, who opted to field veteran centre-back Jamie Carragher ahead of him for the latter half of last season.

Speculation was again rife that he could depart on deadline day, with the Reds swooping for the signatures of defensive duo Tiago Ilori and Mamadou Sakho, to add to Daniel Agger and Kolo Toure.

But, despite the uncertainty that has plagued his future in recent months, the 28-year-old – who was named Man of the Match during the club’s weekend win over Manchester United – claims he never considered leaving Liverpool.

“I’m staying at Liverpool. The rumours were never as strong as it was made out,” he is quoted by Sky Sports via SITA.

“Competition is big but when I look at how we have played, I would say that we belong in the top four.

“There has been no contact with other clubs because the Liverpool management told me that they were counting on me. That is why a transfer was never in my plans.

“I have never considered it (the United game) to be a chance to show that I deserve to stay at Liverpool. It was a big derby but, on the other hand, it was also just another league game.”

Skrtel went on to say that he is not worried about competition for a starting berth, despite Liverpool having strengthened their defensive options.

“Players come, players leave, it’s a normal thing and we will see how it develops,” he added.

Does Martin Skrtel have a future at Liverpool? Or will he be on the move in January?
