Daniel Sturridge says that he has not been shocked by his Liverpool side’s title challenge this season.

The Merseysiders are shock candidates for English football’s top prize with just nine games to play, on the back of an impressive campaign.

Goals from Sturridge and Luis Suarez – who have seen their partnership dubbed as ‘SAS’ – have been pivotal in their form, which leaves them just four points off of leaders Chelsea.

Liverpool struggled to a seventh place finish last season after an up and down first year under Brendan Rodgers, in which the England international only arrived half way through.

However, Sturridge says that he has not been surprised by the rapid turnaround, and that he moved to Anfield with the desire to battle for titles:

“I thought we could challenge because I have always had belief in the teams I have played for.” He told The Guardian.

“When I came here it was a dream to be involved in winning titles, but it’s important everyone realises it is an ongoing process. At the beginning of the season the aim was to get into the Champions League.

“Now we’re getting towards the business end and we’re up there, a lot of peoples’ perception is that maybe we can win the league.

However, Sturridge says that his side have a long way to go, but that the team spirit in the dressing room could be key:

“There are others in a better position than us, it’s going to be very difficult, but we will see what happens. The way the boys are playing and the confidence we have, the camaraderie, is something I have not been part of for a long time.”
