Pepe Reina has revealed that he is unlikely to remain a Liverpool player once his loan spell with Napoli finishes at the end of the season.

The Spanish stopper is due to return to Merseyside when his temporary switch to Naples reaches its climax in a little under six months’ time.

However, he is unlikely to have a future at the club with Brendan Rodgers having put his faith in Simon Mignolet – a major factor in Reina’s exit last year.

The ex-Villarreal man has another two years remaining on his Anfield contract, yet he doesn’t believe that he will stay a Liverpool player for much longer:

“I’ll be here (Napoli) right to the end, but not even I know what will happen after. I’m here now, but I’ve got to return to Liverpool, although it’s unlikely I’ll stay there,” he is quoted by The Mirror.

“It was Liverpool who took the first step by not wanting me anymore because they were placing their faith in a younger goalkeeper.”

Reina has been heavily linked with a return to his boyhood club Barcelona as a replacement for the soon to be out of contract Victor Valdes.

But the 31-year-old has opened the door to staying at Napoli, where he is content:

“I’m very happy here and my family’s happy too.

“Benitez was the most important figure in me arriving here. He convinced me to join this ambitious project at a great club.”
