Former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez is keen to secure a January loan deal for Daniel Agger to join him at Napoli, according to reports from the Daily Mail.

The Danish international has long been thought of as one of the Premier League’s best ‘ball-playing’ defenders, but has struggled to hold down a first-team berth under Brendan Rodgers this term.

The rejuvenated form of Martin Skrtel, Kolo Toure’s vast experience and Mamadou Sakho’s arrival have dramatically increased the Northern Irishman’s options at centre-back, pushing Agger – whose performances have been a little inconsistent – down the pecking order.

This has alerted Benitez, who is keen to set up a reunion with the man he took to Anfield in 2006.

Although the 29-year-old is happy to stay on Merseyside and battle for his future, the Spaniard is hopeful that the lure of battling for the Serie A title and a Europa League campaign – for which the defender will be eligible to feature in – could tempt him.

A loan deal may be used with a view to a permanent switch, although Napoli might face competition from Barcelona.

Benitez has already taken one Liverpool player on loan this season in the shape of goalkeeper Pepe Reina.
