Liverpool have played down rumours of a move for Borussia Dortmund’s Marco Reus, according to reports from The Express.

The German international – who missed the World Cup through injury – has emerged as the Reds’ latest big name targets as they plan for life after Luis Suarez.

Brendan Rodgers has already seen a swoop for Alexis Sanchez end in disappointment, and while Lazar Markovic is on his way in the Serbian is by no means a guaranteed first-team star at just 20.

Reus has emerged in the past few days as a target, with the versatile forward one of European football’s most highly-rated players.

The 25-year-old has been linked with Manchester United already this summer, but his club have played down talk of a sale on numerous occasions.

Now it has emerged that Liverpool officials are ‘baffled’ by the links, which would appear to rule them out of the running.

Reus has previously been valued at around £30m, and the Merseysiders could afford to pay such a sum with Suarez’s exit due to bring in around £75m.
