Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers believes that Fabio Borini’s loan spell at Sunderland has set him up for a brighter future.

The Italian international left the Reds to join the North East side on a season-long deal at the start of the current campaign amid worries that he would not play regularly at Anfield.

He has since impressed at the Stadium of Light, featuring heavily in their run to the Capital One Cup final – in which he netted the opening goal against Manchester City at Wembley.

Borini is known to be a favourite of Rodgers, who coached him at Chelsea and managed him during a brief spell at Swansea.

With Liverpool looking likely to be involved in Champions League football next term he has been tipped to return to battle the likes of Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and Iago Aspas for a starting role, and the Merseysiders’ boss feels that he will come back a stronger player:

“Fabio has got games and scored some very important goals,” he told the Liverpool Echo.

“He got the opportunity to play in a major final at Wembley. All that bodes well for the future.”

Another player away from Anfield for the season is Suso.

The young Spaniard broke into the Liverpool first-team last season at the same time as Raheem Sterling, but was shipped out to Almeria to gain experience this season.

He has performed well in his homeland, and Rodgers believes that he can contribute to the first-team:

“The likes of young Suso has had a terrific loan in Spain playing regular first team football.

“He will come back and come into the squad in the summer and then we will assess where he’s at.”
