Brendan Rodgers has revealed that Steven Gerrard will be offered a fresh contract at Liverpool this summer.

The midfield general and club captain has been the Reds’ talisman for the last ten years, playing key roles in big games such as their 2005 Champions League final victory in Istanbul.

But his glittering career looks to be entering its finalchapter, with Gerrard now 33.

He is no longer the club’s highest paid player following Luis Suarez’s new contract, and some speculation has suggested that the Merseysiders may wait until nearer the 2015 expiration of his current deal to discuss an extension.

However Gerrard has undergone somewhat of a renaissance in recent months, with Rodgers having converted him into his deepest-lying midfielder.

The England captain was a key player in Liverpool’s recent 11-match winning run in the league, and the Kop chief says that a new contract offer for his man is set to be made in a few months’ time:

“Steven will be one we look to get a contract to in the summer,” he told the Liverpool Echo.

“With a year to go, it’s something we will address.

“I believe Steven will play beyond 2015. He is a player who has really shown his qualities this season.

“Come the summer, he will still only be 34. Looking towards the future, I still think he’s going to be a key part of our squad.

“He has dropped into a new position and played it seamlessly. His intelligence in the game is second to none. He is improving all the time.

“It’s one where he has been brilliant for me as a captain and as a player this season and I would like that to continue.”
