Brendan Rodgers has vented his frustrations at Liverpool‘s lack of transfer activity at Anfield this month.

The Reds sat atop the Premier League table on Christmas Day, but a run of tricky fixtures has left them clinging onto fourth spot by goal difference heading into the Merseyside derby.

Mohamed Salah was expected to join the club earlier this month, but as negotiations between themselves and FC Basel stalled Chelsea swooped for the winger.

To further rub salt into the wounds, teams around them have strengthened with Manchester United securing Juan Mata and Everton moving for Lacina Traore and Aiden McGeady.

Rodgers says that this season is Liverpool’s best chance of breaking back into the top four for some time, and that he is disappointed by the lack of activity so far.

“Of course, I wanted to strengthen the team and if we are unable to do that it would be disappointing, but there’s nothing you can do about it,” Rodgers told The Mirror.

“I think, yes, absolutely, we are so close to our aim of the Champions League and we should do everything we can to get there – and the owners feel like that as well.

“The people in the club see where we are at. I’ve always felt with this team that we would need to have everyone available to keep us in it, but if they are not we’ll still have to find ways to win games.”

Liverpool are said to be in the race for Tom Ince of Blackpool and Napoli’s Gokhan Inler.
