Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says that he will be going for quality over quantity in this summer’s transfer window.

The Reds chief is set to be handed upwards of £60m by the club’s board over the coming months after securing Champions League qualification and narrowly missing out on the Premier League title.

These efforts have provided the Merseysiders with a major cash injection, which Rodgers is ready to spend in order to keep his team in the top four and at Europe’s top table.

Adam Lallana of Southampton is seen as a top target, but with Southampton holding firm it may take almost half of the Northern Irishman’s budget to land the talented playmaker.

But Rodgers says that he only wants a few top quality players rather than a host of names to bulk out his squad:

“I don’t want to put a figure on how many but I would rather have one or two absolute top players than seven that might not help us,” he is quoted by The Mirror.

“It’s about the quality. We can’t be going into the Champions League this year with doubts about players. We have to be going in knowing what the players’ capacity to play is and their capabilities.

“Two years ago, when I came in, I was looking to introduce new ideas but a lot of the players weren’t there because of the European Championship.

“That affected the start of the season. At least this summer we have the principles bedded in place and the players that come in will be the profile we want. It should be better for us this summer.”
