Liverpool have contacted Bayer Leverkusen to discuss a deal for highly-rated midfielder Emre Can, according to reports from Kicker.

Reds chief Brendan Rodgers is keen to invest a rumoured £60m in his first-team squad this summer on the back of an impressive campaign that saw Champions League qualification secured and a title challenge that lasted to the final day of the Premier League season.

The Northern Irishman is convinced that a few more additions will push his side on, and he sees Can as an ideal signing.

The German U-21 international has been one of Leverkusen’s top performers in recent times, establishing himself as a key first-team player under the stewardship of former Kop idol Sami Hyypia – who was axed as the club’s coach not long ago.

It is understood that Liverpool have approached the Bundesliga side, but his availability is as of yet unknown.

Bayern Munich are also in the fight, and could pip the Merseysiders to Can due to a buy-back clause they had inserted into the deal that saw him move from the Allanz Arena to the BayArena last year.

The youngster – known for his versatility – can play in almost any midfield position as well as in a central or left-sided defensive role.
