Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is hopeful that cross-city rivals Everton will do them a major favour in the title race by taking points off of Manchester City this evening.

The Northern Irishman’s side lost the momentum in the push for the Premier League trophy with a home defeat at the hands of Chelsea last weekend and are now reliant on the Sky Blues slipping up.

City trail Liverpool by three points, but with a game in hand and a superior goal difference they are seen as favourites to claim the top prize.

Arguably the most difficult of their ties comes today as they travel to Goodison Park to take on Everton, who themselves are still fighting for a Champions League spot.

Rodgers takes his side to Crystal Palace on Monday night and is hopeful that the Toffees will have given them a great chance of sealing a first title in 24 years by halting City:

“Manchester City have a really, really tough game against Everton.” He is quoted by the Liverpool Echo.

“I have read some bits and pieces about Everton not wanting to do Liverpool a favour but Everton, in their own right, are a great club and have done really, really well this season – and in particular at home.

“They are fighting for a Champions League position so they will be playing for themselves. They have some outstanding players and are looking for a result.”

City have a poor record in the blue half of Merseyside, losing four of their last five visits.
