Liverpool are the latest side to have joined the race for soon to be out of contract Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes, according to reports from Sport.

The Spanish international has already confessed that he is to leave the Nou Camp at the end of the season when his deal runs out in search of a new challenge.

Monaco and Manchester City have been most heavily linked with the experienced 32-year-old, but now it is understood that the Reds are negotiating a free transfer with him.

Despite having snapped up Simon Mignolet last summer, Brendan Rodgers is thought to be on the lookout for a new stopper as he sets about making his side a European giant once again.

With Pepe Reina likely to leave at the end of the season when his loan deal at Napoli expires and Brad Jones not seen as good enough to play regularly, Valdes has emerged as a decent option as the Northern Irishman looks to keep competition for places high.

The Catalan icon is said to be looking for a change of scenery after winning almost every prize possible during his time with Barca and the Spanish national team, and he could be attracted to Liverpool’s desire to return to the top of the English game after a period of disappointment.
