With Champions League football guaranteed and prize money from a high domestic finish in the pot, the Kop chief is rumoured to have upwards of £60m at his disposal.

One area he is keen to bolster is his backline, with a left-sided defender a priority.

Rojo is said to be his top target, with the Argentine having been impressive in Lisbon.

The 24-year-old looks due to represent his nation at the World Cup this summer, and is seen as an upgrade on current options such as Jon Flanagan and Jose Enrique.

The Portuguese giants are gripped by financial uncertainty, yet it is thought that a bid of around £20m may be needed to lure him away.

Rojo can also cover at centre-back, and has been praised for his all-round defensive abilities.
