Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is plotting a move for Schalke’s Dutch hit-man Klaas-Jan Huntelaar if he is unable to keep Luis Suarez at Anfield this summer, according to reports from The Express.

It is thought that the Uruguayan – who netted a staggering 31 goals in the Premier League for the Reds last season – is on the verge of a switch to Barcelona with negotiations between the two clubs at an early stage.

Liverpool would ideally like to keep the 27-year-old, but with his ban for biting Giorgio Chiellini in place and the player himself rumoured to be keen to relocate to the Camp Nou, a sale may be the best option.

But the Merseysiders will hold out for around £80m, or £50m plus Chilean sensation Alexis Sanchez.

If either deal goes through, the Rodgers will need to replace his attacking talisman, and would have cash to do so.

While Mario Balotelli has been mooted as a target, another name on the Northern Irishman’s radar is Huntelaar.

The former Real Madrid man came back from an injury plagued 2013/14 season to book a spot in the Netherlands’ World Cup squad, and recently netted a penalty-kick to book his nation’s spot in the quarter-finals.

Liverpool considered a move for the 30-year-old when they sold Andy Carroll last summer, but were deterred due to the player’s eagerness to stay with Schalke and play in the Champions League.

But with his contract now in its last year, a cut-price raid for the goal-getter is an option, and would help the Merseysiders to cope without Suarez.

Arsenal are also keen.

Liverpool must keep Suarez
