Liverpool’s away fans were attacked before, during and after their Champions League game against Zenit St Petersburg last night.

Seven fans were attacked as they emerged from a bar on Wednesday night in the city centre. The Liverpool fans were forced to stay inside after a group of around 40 hooligans set upon the bar with knuckle dusters and boxing gloves. Security managed to break up the attack by using baseball bats and made sure that the seven fans were led to safety.

There were also reports of violence before, during and after Thursday night’s game with some fans talking about it on Twitter according to The Daily Mail

Red’s fan Matt Sant tweeted ‘****ing terrifying experience, glad to be back in hotel’

Sasha Lockheart added ‘One of my friends, had both his teeth knocked out at half time, came back blood all over him.

Zenit’s mob tried to start fights with us on the metro back, me and my mate had to get a police escort back.’

When concerns were raised about racism, Zenit St Petersburg assured Liverpool that their fans should feel safe at the game and dispelled fears by saying

‘The club’s personnel have been working  hard so that the players and fans alike would enjoy tomorrow’s  match,’ the  Russian champions said in a statement on their website.

‘Zenit have always condemned any form of racism. We hope our opponents share the same principles and tomorrow we all be treated to a great football match and passionate crowd support’

There were riot police present in the stadium last night and according to local reports there were 2,500 police surrounding the stadium before, during and after the game.
