Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard confessed he knew about Carragher’s plans of retirement and he tried to convince the defender to stay for one more season at the Premier League club.

“I’ve known a little bit longer than other people. I’ve tried just as hard as everyone else to try to keep him going for a bit longer,” Gerrard told Liverpoolfc.com.

However, the reds skipper respects his team-mate opinion: “We have to respect his decision. He’s had a fantastic career and he feels it’s the right time to go out, at the end of the season”, the midfielder expressed to the club’s website.

For Anfield’s No.8, Carragher’s lack of game-time this season might be related to the defender’s decision of hanging up the boots at the end of the season.

“At times this season it has been difficult for him, not being a regular starter – because he has been a starter since he made his debut”, he assures.

After announcing his retirement, the 35 year-old has been compared with club legends Alan Hanson or Mark Lawrenson, but Steven Gerrard goes further.

“For me, if he’s not alongside them he’s a little bit above them. That’s the biggest compliment I can pay him”, he affirmed, adding up that during his peak he was “one of the best defenders in the world”.
