Jamie Carragher believes that Brendan Rodgers can get the very best from Mario Balotelli if the Italian completes his shock move to Liverpool.

The Reds are understood to have agreed a £16m fee with AC Milan for the Italy international, whose range of talents have often been offset by moments of madness both on and off of the pitch.

Balotelli has already spent a chunk of his career in England with Manchester City, where he helped the club to their first ever Premier League title but clashed with then manager Roberto Mancini and made front page headlines more often than back page ones for his erratic behaviour.

But with Rodgers’ experience of handling Luis Suarez – who was recently banned for the THIRD time in his career for biting an opponent – before his switch to Barcelona, Carragher believes that the Northern Irishman has the experience and ability to control the 24-year-old:

“Brendan has had plenty of practice with Luis I suppose.” He told Sky Sports.

“The main thing for any player is what they do on the pitch. Both of those players had issues off the pitch, but I think it’s fair to say Suarez did a lot more on the pitch.

“You will always get a little bit more freedom if you’re producing on the pitch, that’s the main thing for any player.

“Balotelli is a player who has been here before and did a lot of stuff that was good for us in the media. He probably didn’t quite show his potential at Manchester City and that, coupled with his off-the field problems, probably saw him depart.

“He’s the Italian number one striker and you want to see good players here. Liverpool do need a striker.”
