Liverpool’s seemingly doomed plans to clinch the signature of Paris Saint-Germain’s Javier Pastore in January look to be back on track, with the midfielder set to leave his current club on loan in the New Year, according to reports from talkSPORT.

The Reds have been strongly linked with the Argentine in recent times, with Brendan Rodgers thought to be keen to land a big name player to add to his squad.

The likes of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Willian both opted against switches to Anfield over the summer to join Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea respectively, leaving the Northern Irishman without a star name to accompany the likes of Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and Steven Gerrard.

It had looked like his pursuit of Pastore would also end in disappointment – with the player suggesting that he was keen to stay in France – but now it is thought that he may be on his way next month.

The 24-year-old is thought to have altered his stance due to a continued lack of first-team action at the Parc des Princes – which is damaging his hopes of representing his nation at next summer’s World Cup – making a loan arrangement a possibility.

With Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson both struggling for fitness – albeit with the latter set for a minimal spell on the sidelines – Rodgers is thought to be concerned at a lack of depth in his midfield.

Pastore’s addition would boost the club’s attacking capabilities, with the playmaker adept in a more advanced role.
