Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is planning a January bid for Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Granit Xhaka as he continues his search for Steven Gerrard’s eventual successor, according to reports from The Metro.

Although the Kop captain is still a key first-team player, however at 33-years-of-age there is a growing feeling on Merseyside that he will not be able to provide the same swashbuckling displays that have made him one of European football’s top talents for some time much longer.

With no natural replacement for Gerrard in his current squad, Rodgers has been scouring the transfer market and is believed to have settled on Xhaka.

The Swiss international has forged a reputation as a top enforcer with a number of commanding displays for boyhood club FC Basel and now Monchengladbach, and is believed to be seen as a wise addition by Liverpool’s scouting team.

His aggression and range of passing have seen comparisons with Gerrard arise in the past, which has led to rumours of a move to England for some time.

Manchester United have been credited with an interest in the past, but now the Anfield side are ready to move for Xhaka.

His current employers value him at around £20m, which is a fee that Rodgers is likely to be able to stretch to with speculation suggesting that he will have considerable funds available in the New Year to build on his side’s solid start to the season.
