Former Liverpool vice-captain Jamie Carragher believes that his old club’s decision to snap up Rickie Lambert will prove to be a wise piece of business.

The Reds completed a shock move for the 32-year-old earlier this week to make his move from Southampton their first piece of action for the summer transfer window.

Despite his impressive stats over the course of the past few seasons, some have questioned whether or not the once Liverpool youth man is cut out to represent the Merseysiders at the highest level after spending much of his career in the Football League.

Lambert is expected to play second fiddle to Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez – who netted over 50 goals between them last term – and Carragher believes that his addition will prove to be a vital one:

“I think it’s a very good signing,” he is quoted by The Express.

“He’s a local boy, a Liverpool fan, and it’s probably been a dream for him.

“There’ll be lots of games with Liverpool being involved in the Champions League, so he’ll play his part and I’m sure he’ll get some goals.”
