Liverpool are reportedly targeting Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng, according to the Metro.

The Reds are on course for a top 4 finish, and have the opportunity to top the table with a victory over Tottenham this weekend. And Brendan Rodgers is keen to strengthen his squad ahead of the expected addition of midweek Champions League football.

The former Manchester City defender recently signed a contract extension with Bayern until 2018, after playing a big part in their league success. Bayern have already been crowned Bundesliga champions, and will face Manchester United next month as they aim to defend their Champions League crown.

But Rodgers is looking to sign big players ahead of the Reds’ involvement in the European competition next season, as well as another title bid, and is ready to target some of the biggest names in European football, regardless of their price tag.

Boateng has made 22 league appearances under Pep Guardiola this season, but Rodgers is hoping he can lure the German back to the Premier League. The 25-year-old spent one season with Manchester City, before joining the Bavarian club in 2011. He made 16 appearances in the Premier League with City, but failed to score a goal during his stay at the Etihad.
