Liverpool.

The Portuguese centre-back completed a £7m deadline day move to Anfield with a reputation as one of Europe’s top emerging defenders.

However, despite Daniel Agger suffering a late injury in the build-up to the Reds’ clash with Swansea earlier this week, the youngster was overlooked by manager Brendan Rodgers.

He instead featured for the Merseysiders’ U-21 side, helping them to a 5-2 win over Sunderland.

After getting his first taste of action in the red shirt Ilori is keen to press on and force his way into the first-team:

“I loved playing in the game and it was a great win, I hope I can carry on winning at Anfield. Every player wants to play whether it’s in the first team or the reserves,” he told the Liverpool Echo.

“I want to get as many minutes as I can. I didn’t have a proper pre-season due to injuring my hand but it’s good to be back fit now. I’m enjoying it here. Brendan Rodgers seems like a great guy and a great coach. I will do my best for the club.”

Ilori was one of three central defenders to arrive at Liverpool over the summer.

Experienced Ivorian Kolo Toure and promising Frenchman Mamdou Sakho also joined, adding to Agger and Martin Skrtel in Rodgers’ armoury.

As a result, competition for a starting berth is high, which may see the 20-year-old struggle for game time in the short-term.

Should Brendan Rodgers look to Tiago Ilori rather than Kolo Toure?
