The 20-year-old has been consistently linked with a move away from the San Siro over the course of the past few months, with the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea both being mooted as potential destinations.

But now Liverpool have emerged as shock candidates for the talented youngster, with Brendan Rodgers desperate to land a marquee signing.

The Northern Irishman saw attempts for big name players such as Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Willian thwarted during the last transfer window, but is till thought to be keen on landing a genuine star performer.

El Shaarawy is thought to meet his criteria and he is hopeful that a move away from Milan could be a possibility.

Rodgers is optimistic that his plans for the Merseyside club may enough to tempt the versatile forward, especially if the Reds are still close to the Premier League’s summit in January.

Dortmund are believed to be favourites should El Shaarawy elect to make a move, but reports suggest Liverpool are not far behind their German rivals.

The Anfield club could look to utilise the Egyptian-born ace in a fearsome front three alongside Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge.

Could Stephan El Shaarawy make Liverpool a genuine top four team?
