Liverpool reluctant to let defender leave
The Uruguayan has been a bit-part player for the Reds since his arrival in 2011, with the likes of Martin Skrtel, Daniel Agger and Jamie Carragher enjoying the lion’s share of game time.
This has led to speculation that he may be able to leave the club this winter, with Wigan, as well as a number of Serie A sides, believed to be interested in a loan deal.
Coates was a part of Rodgers’ XI as the Merseysiders slipped to a humiliating FA Cup defeat to Oldham over the weekend, a game in which he struggled.
This has led to further speculation that he may be allowed to move on, but his manager revealed that there have been no offers for the 22-year-old and that he needs time to develop:
“No, nothing thus far. (He’s) a player who needs games, but we need to keep the group.” He is quoted by talkSPORT.
Liverpool have not bee overly active in the transfer market this month, with Daniel Sturridge their only arrival so far.
But, Inter Milan playmaker Philippe Coutinho is expected to complete a switch to Anfield soon, with Jack Butland and Tom Ince rumoured to be following closely behind.
Rodgers is hopeful of strengthening his squad before the deadline, but believes that they may still be some way off the level of strength he desires:
“It’s going to take a few windows to get the squad competitive.”
