Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard may be forced to miss the crucial festive fixture schedule, after being forced off early in the second half of Saturday’s 4-1 win over West Ham with a suspected hamstring strain, reports the Telegraph.

Gerrard had tests at the club’s training ground on Sunday, but the early signs were not encouraging, with early reports suggesting the Liverpool and England skipper could be ruled out for as long as a month.

That would mean Gerrard would miss tough away fixtures at Tottenham, Chelsea and Manchester City, as the Reds seek to establish themselves in the top four heading into the New Year.

The news will come as a bitter blow to Reds boss Brendan Rodgers, who only found out last week that in-form striker Daniel Sturridge is likely to miss up to two months of the season with an ankle injury.

Rodgers will take comfort from the fact his team have been without Luis Suarez and Phillipe Coutinho for long periods already this season, but the loss of Sturridge and Gerrard at the same time will perhaps prove the biggest test.

Rodgers will turn to Lucas Leiva and Joe Allen to cover Gerrard’s absence.

While both are considered more naturally defensive midfielders, Allen has impressed in a slightly more advanced role during the home wins over Norwich and West Ham.
