Daniel Sturridge has vowed to “step up” and score the goals Liverpool will need next season following the sale of Luis Suarez.

The Uruguayan bagged 31 Premier League efforts last term as the Reds narrowly missed out on a first ever Premier League title, and was voted as the division’s best player.

But Liverpool were unable to keep him away from Barcelona’s grasp as the Spaniards swooped to complete a £75m deal after the World Cup.

Although Suarez grabbed the headlines on many occasions, his relationship with Sturridge – dubbed ‘the SAS’ – was fruitful, with the 24-year-old Englishman netting 21 goals to finish as the league’s second highest scorer.

The former Chelsea and Manchester City star is expected to become the focal point of Brendan Rodgers’ team for the coming camping, and the player himself says that he’s ready to take on the added responsibility:

“It was a unique partnership,” he is quoted by the Liverpool Echo. “I wish Luis all the best. We shared some good times together.

“We created history together with our goals and I think we became the most successful Liverpool partnership together in one season.

“In terms of next season for the goals, I’ll step up myself and everyone has to step up to get the goals because it is a long season.

“The new boys who have come in as well as the players who have been there all season. This is a huge club with a lot of players who can step up.

“Luis has left and that’s football. He’s moved on but he’s doing it for himself and his family.

“As a team we will move forward.”
