Daniel Sturridge says that he is keen to take Liverpool team-mate Raheem Sterling under his wing in a bid to ensure he fulfils his potential.

The 19-year-old winger emerged as one of Europe’s very best young players at the back end of last season as he cemented a starting berth in Brendan Rodgers’ side during the Reds’ title push.

His impressive form led to a World Cup call and has prompted talk that the Jamaican-born ace could be one of Liverpool and England’s star turns for the foreseeable future.

Sturridge himself is by no means a veteran, but the 24-year-old says that he is ready to help get the best from Sterling after struggling as a young player himself at Manchester City and Chelsea:

“Me and Raheem are very close.” He is quoted by the Daily Star.

“To me, he’s my little brother and I look after him and try to help him as a footballer and as a person.

“I didn’t have anyone taking me under their wing when I was his age, so it is important and I understand my role with him.

“Raheem is a great player. He’s young and he’s got a lot of talent.

“He still improving. He’s already improved so much which I am happy about and he will continue to do that.”
