West Ham are thought to be lining up a bid for Liverpool winger Stewart Downing, in a move that would see the England man reunited with former team mate Andy Carroll at Upton Park, according to The Metro.

Downing has had a difficult couple of seasons at Anfield since completing a £20million move from Aston Villa in the summer of 2011, and is thought to now be surplus to requirements at the club.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers revealed he was prepared to sell Downing last January, until a sudden turnaround in form saw the winger stay at the club and start almost every Premier League game until the end of the season.

If Downing was playing for a move it seems to have worked, with the Hammers understood to be seriously considering a bid that would see the former Middlesbrough man reunited with Andy Carroll, who they have only permanently signed from Liverpool this summer for a fee of £15million.

The pair played a season together at Anfield under Kenny Dalglish, a year in which Downing famously failed to register a single goal or assist, despite creating numerous chances for Carroll and company on a consistent basis.

Downing improved considerably in the second half of last season, but the overall statistics don’t make great reading for a player who cost the club £20million. He is set to leave Liverpool with a record of 65 league appearances and just three goals to his name.
