Liverpool following his £8.5m switch from Inter Milan.

The Reds beat a number of interested parties, including Southampton, to secure the 20-year-olds services, as manager Brendan Rodgers looks to strengthen his squad for the latter half of the campaign.

He has penned a five-year contract with the Merseysiders and could be in line for their weekend Premier League clash with Manchester City.

Coutinho, who will wear the number 10 shirt for the Anfield outfit, revealed that he is happy to have completed the move and sees it as a big chance to further his career:

“It’s a very important step in my career and I’m expecting to come here and play good football to give my contribution on the pitch.” He told the club’s official website.

“Liverpool is a great club with great players. We’ve always heard about Liverpool’s history in Brazil.

“They are the club that have been interested in me and that have showed this interest so I know they believe in me and my football.”

Fellow Brazilian Lucas Leiva was said to have been influential in the deal, with reports suggesting that he had spoken about the club with the youngster.

Coutinho revealed that he has chatted with the midfielder, who convinced him that a move to England was the right option:

“I’ve been talking to him for some time and he said good things about Liverpool. He believes this might be a nice club for me and now it’s happening.”

If Liverpool are going to get back to the glory days, more goals will have to come out of midfield. Coutinho and others, when given opportunities to play, must make a positive impact on the game.
