Liverpool will have to pay Portsmouth £1million if they win the league, reports the Liverpool Echo.

The Reds currently sit top of the Premier League with just 6 games to go, and being tipped by many to go all the way to lift the trophy. And success for the Reds will be welcomed all the way down in League 2.

88 positions lower in the football league, Portsmouth are currently sitting 5 points above the relegation zone, where they would fall out of the football league all together should they be relegated. Once lifting the FA Cup and playing AC Milan in the Europa League not many years go, the club’s well documented financial woes have led to Pompey battling for survival as a club, let alone in a league.

But their cash-flow issues could be improved should the Reds lift the Premier league trophy. When Glen Johnson joined Liverpool from Portsmouth in 2009, for £17.5million, a clause was put into Johnson’s contract that would see Liverpool pay £1million if they went on to league success.

The money would be a welcome boost to Portsmouth, who have fallen from grace at the cost of poor finance control to the disappointment of all football fans.

Liverpool still must host Manchester City and Chelsea in their bid for the league title.
