Young Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling has praised his club captain Steven Gerrard as an “inspiration”, the Independent reports.

The 18-year-old has risen to prominence this season at Anfield under new boss Brendan Rodgers, becoming a regular in the first team and one of their most consistent performers.

His performances have even caught the eye of England boss Roy Hodgson, who awarded him his first senior cap against Sweden in the recent friendly defeat.

Sterling has heaped praise on his captain for both club and country, Steven Gerrard for the part he has played in his success and how he has also helped him off the field of play.

“He has been brilliant for me. He’s always looking after me, always checking to see if I’m alright,” Sterling told the Mirror. “I’ve noticed as well that if anyone touches me on the pitch, he’ll always get them straight back with a tackle.

“He’s always looking after me, on the pitch, off the pitch.

“He looked after me when I first joined the club, got into the team and when I was looking for somewhere to live. He’s an inspiration and a great captain.”

Gerrard himself has been in excellent form in recent weeks, and has been key in his sides recent improvement of results.

Liverpool will need both him and Sterling to be on song when they visit Manchester United on Sunday, as they look to continue their push up the table in which they currently sit in eighth place.
