Reina claims Liverpool cannot compete with top sides
The Reds have so far failed to beat a side in the top half of Premier League this season, after a shaky start to the campaign.
They looked to be on the verge of doing so against Manchester City, until Reina made a mistake late on allowing Sergio Aguero to squeeze the ball into an empty net to level the scores.
But, the Spaniard believes that individual errors are not to blame for the club’s failure to compete with the top sides, and that their squad is simply not good enough:
“I think with the likes of City, United and Chelsea, they have a big edge over us at the moment, both financially and squad-wise,
“There’s a reason they are so many points ahead of us, and it’s not because of one or two better players. Right now we can’t compete with the big guns.”
Reina has been heavily criticised this term, with a number of high profile errors costing Liverpool valuable points.
But, the 31-year-old feels that he hasn’t been too bad so far, and that the negative press he and his team-mates are receiving is a little unfair:
“Some people say I’ve had a bad season, but honestly I think I only had three poor matches, at the beginning of the year,
“It’s been a strange season for me because I’ve missed lots of games with injury. This has been the most unsettled season, both personally and as a team, since I joined the club.
“Liverpool is going through a transitional period, with new ideas and a different playing philosophy. That takes time. People have to be patient. It’s normal for us to be erratic”
