Rodgers: quality not quantity needed at Liverpool
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers believes that he needs only three or four top quality players to get the Merseyside outfit competing at the top of the table.
Their surge has been, in part, due to additions made over January.
The Northern Irishman tied up deals for Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho, and both have settled quickly at Anfield.
Rodgers believes that a few more signings of such quality will be enough to see the club competing at the top end of the table once again:
“It is quality we are after now, not quantity,” he is quoted by The Mirror.
“We see the impact of Coutinho, and Sturridge’s quality, in January. That’s what we’re looking for.
“If we bring in another three or four players of that quality, add that to what we have got, then we have got a strong squad that can compete.”
Liverpool endured a tough start to the current season, occupying a spot in the bottom half of the table for quite some time.
But, with the squad now settling they have shown signs of challenging the top teams once more, and their recent form does not surprise Rodgers:
“You look at what we have done this season, and the progression is there to see. In our first 14 games, we were only 12th in the table, but our last 14 we are third best – and that is what we expected.
“It was all about the players bedding in and coming to terms to what we are after, and that takes time. I think you can see we are getting there now, and we have a really strong squad already.”
