Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers hopes that midfielder Joe Cole will take every chance he is given at Liverpool to save his career.

Cole scored to help the Reds come from behind to beat his former club West Ham last week, but after almost two years out of the Anfield first team Rodgers has urged Cole to consistently impress.

Rodgers has struggled to name the same Liverpool side for two games in succession with injuries, suspensions and Europa League football all to blame, but Cole could be set for a more vital role in weeks to come.

The former Chelsea and West Ham playmaker spent last season on loan in France with Lille and was expected to leave Liverpool permanently this summer but after no team met their valuation, another period on the bench proceeded.

Rodgers has spelled it out to Cole about his role in the team and praised his involvement in last week’s victory, but he claims it is all about consistency now.

“Joe’s game is very simple – it’s about goals, assists, interceptions and tackles,” Rodgers told talkSPORT.

“In the second half (against West Ham) he did all those things.

“When he gets the opportunity he has to take it. He’s a good guy that works hard at his game.”
