Adam Lallana has held talks with Southampton to demand a summer transfer to Liverpool, according to reports from The Sun.

The midfielder – who turned 26 this weekend – has been one of the Premier League’s standout performers this term, captaining the Saints to an impressive upper midtable finish.

His displays – which look set to earn him a spot in England’s World Cup squad – have alerted a host of top clubs, with the Reds and bitter rivals Manchester United having been strongly linked with his signature.

Reports last week suggested that Liverpool have lodged a £20m offer for the silky passer, and now it is understood that the player himself has asked to be allowed to leave.

Lallana is thought to see the move as his big chance to step up to the highest level, and is hopeful that the loyalty he’s shown to Southampton by sticking with them throughout their journey from League One to the top tier will persuade the club to respect his wishes.

Bournemouth also stand to make a big profit on the deal, with 25% of the fee due to go to them thanks to a clause that took him along the South Coast as a youngster.

Lallana is rumoured to be ready to reject United to play under Brendan Rodgers in the Champions League next term.
